Big companies trading on a low multiple of earnings that are also generating real free cash flow, so the cheapness is not simply an accounting artefact.
Market cap over $10bn keeps it to businesses with a trading history and analyst coverage. Price-to-earnings under 15 is the cheapness test. Free cash flow yield over 5% is the honesty test: earnings are an opinion and cash is a fact, so a company that looks cheap on earnings but generates no cash is not on this list.
The free cash flow leg is what makes this worth scanning rather than a P/E sort. Read the ones where the two disagree with the market's view of the sector, and check why the multiple is low before assuming it is wrong.
A P/E screen alone is the most crowded screen in existence and mostly returns value traps and cyclicals at peak earnings. Requiring cash generation alongside it removes a large share of both.
Trailing P/E is backward-looking, so a company whose earnings are about to fall looks cheapest right before it is not. The screen has no view on debt, so a highly leveraged company can pass. It will systematically over-represent whichever sector is currently out of favour, which is sometimes the point and sometimes the problem.
