-0.1%S&P 500 (SPY)
-0.2%Difference
+0.2%Equal-weighted across the 57 stocks this screen matched when it was published, in USD, price return only. All 57 are priced today.
What it matches today may differ from the 57 stocks above. That difference is the point of running it.
Businesses that earn a high return on the equity they employ, keep most of each sale as gross profit, and do it without much borrowed money. The kind of company that can fund its own growth.
Three filters, each standing in for one leg of the same idea. Return on equity above 20% says the business earns well on the capital shareholders have left in it. Gross margin above 60% says it has pricing power rather than volume. Debt-to-equity under 1 insists the first two are not simply the arithmetic of leverage, which is the usual way a mediocre business prints a high return on equity.
Treat a hit as a candidate for reading, not a buy. Quality is the most reliably priced-in factor there is, so the interesting question about anything on this list is what it costs, which this screen deliberately does not ask. Pair it with the valuation view before doing anything.
Most quality screens stop at return on equity. Adding the debt constraint is the whole point: without it the screen fills up with balance sheets that borrowed their way to a good-looking ratio.
Gross margin is not comparable across industries, so this tilts hard towards software and pharma and will rarely surface a good retailer or distributor. Return on equity is meaningless for banks. Companies that have bought back enough stock to run negative equity are excluded by the data rather than by judgement.
Every one of the 57 stocks it matched on 21 Sept 2026, with its own return since, in USD. These average to the figure above. A stock that no longer quotes stays on the list, at the bottom, rather than disappearing from the record.

Ask the author what a hit means, where the data is thin, or for the version you would actually use. Those are the questions that get answered.
